What is Pimcore Platform (PIM, MDM, DAM and DXP)?
Pimcore was founded in 2009 in Salzburg, Austria, by Dietmar Rietsch and Matthias Blauth, who remain co-CEOs. The company reports more than 120,000 installations and over 400 enterprise customers, and Gartner included Pimcore in its 2026 Magic Quadrant for Master Data Management Solutions as well as its Digital Experience Platforms research. Nordwind Growth invested in October 2022. On 27 August 2026 Nordwind agreed to sell its majority stake to Tenzing, a London-based private equity investor, with completion subject to antitrust approvals.
The licence model changed in 2025. Pimcore Platform 2025.1 moved the Community Edition from GPLv3 to the Pimcore Open Core License (POCL), which keeps source code access but limits free use to organisations under EUR 5 million in annual revenue, non-profits, academia and non-production use. Commercial users license the Professional, Enterprise or Enterprise PaaS editions. Pimcore states that it is not a SaaS product: customers self-host, run it in a private cloud or use the managed PaaS.
The 2026 roadmap centres on the Data Spine and agentic AI. The Agent SDK, introduced in April 2026, builds agents into the core, and release 2026.3 added an Agent Bundle in beta, final MCP support, OAuth 2.0 for external agents and vector embeddings. Implementations usually run through certified partners and require development skills in PHP and Symfony.
strengths
- Broad scope on one codebase: PIM, MDM, DAM, experience portals and CMS capabilities.
- Deployment control: self-hosted on-premise, private cloud or managed Pimcore PaaS with multi-cloud and region options.
- Free Community Edition for organisations under EUR 5 million revenue, with full source code access under POCL.
- Included in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Master Data Management Solutions.
- Agentic AI foundations shipped in 2026: Agent SDK, MCP support, OAuth 2.0 for agents and vector embeddings.
considerations
- Since 2025.1 the Community Edition is source-available under POCL; it is no longer OSI open source, and commercial use above the revenue threshold needs a paid edition.
- Highly configurable platform; total cost depends heavily on implementation partner effort and in-house development capacity.
- Pending majority stake sale to Tenzing (announced 27 August 2026); confirm roadmap and licensing continuity.
- No multi-tenant SaaS option; buyers wanting a vendor-operated SaaS PIM should compare the PaaS service level carefully.
Who is Pimcore best for?
Manufacturers, retailers and wholesalers with development resources that want a customisable PIM, MDM and DAM platform under their own deployment control.
European presence. Headquartered in Salzburg with a subsidiary in Germany and a certified partner network; the managed Pimcore PaaS offers multi-cloud and region options.
Capabilities and AI
Pimcore Copilot provides AI assistance for workflows and automation, and the Data Spine underpins Enrich, Translate (23 languages), Generate and Predict features. The Agent SDK (April 2026) builds agents into the core platform, and release 2026.3 (September 2026) made MCP support in Datahub Simple REST final, added an Agent Bundle in beta, OAuth 2.0 for external agents and vector embeddings for semantic search.

Frequently asked questions about Pimcore
Is Pimcore still open source?
Not in the strict OSI sense. From Pimcore Platform 2025.1 the Community Edition moved from GPLv3 to the Pimcore Open Core License (POCL). Source code remains available, and use is free for organisations under EUR 5 million annual revenue, non-profits, academia and non-production use. Other commercial users need a Professional or Enterprise licence.
Who is acquiring Pimcore?
On 27 August 2026 Nordwind Growth, Pimcore's majority investor since October 2022, agreed to sell its majority stake to Tenzing, a London-based private equity firm investing in European software. Completion is subject to antitrust approvals. Co-founders Dietmar Rietsch and Matthias Blauth remain co-CEOs, and financial terms were not disclosed.
Is Pimcore available as SaaS?
Pimcore states that it is not a SaaS product. Customers can self-host the Enterprise Edition on-premise or in a private cloud, or use Pimcore Enterprise Edition PaaS, a managed service with multi-cloud and region options and 24/7 support. This gives more deployment control than multi-tenant SaaS, with more responsibility for upgrades.
